Each of the seven physicians who comprise Wilmington Orthopaedic Group is board certified. Our doctors are leaders in their specialties and several have been honored both regionally and nationally.
Mark
D. Foster, MD
Dr. Foster has been a member of Wilmington Orthopaedic Group since moving to
Wilmington in 1989. He received his undergraduate degree from Clemson
University and his medical degree from the Medical University of South
Carolina. He received additional fellowship training in surgery of the spine
at the North Carolina Spine Center, Chapel Hill. His foot and ankle
fellowship was performed at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Dr.
Foster and Dr. Albert Marr are the only fellowship trained foot and ankle
specialists in the Wilmington area. Dr. Foster is certified by the American
Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has specialized expertise in the treatment
of degenerative and traumatic conditions of the lumbar and thoracic spine,
as well as orthopaedic disorders of the foot and ankle.
Dr. Foster served as
president of the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association during 2006 and on
the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Spine Society. He is a member
of the North Amercian Spine Society and the American Orthopaedic Foot and
Ankle Society. In addition, Dr. Foster is a member of numerous civic,
charitable and professional organizations. He has also served as chairman of
the Cape Fear Chapter of the American Red Cross Board of Directors He is
married with two children.

Dr. Sutton has been with Wilmington Orthopaedic Group since
1993. He was a Phi Beta Kappa honor undergraduate at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from which he also
received his medical degree. Dr. Sutton completed a five-year
residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Medical University of
South Carolina in Charleston and a fellowship in Sports Medicine
and arthroscopic surgery at the prestigious Hughston Sports
Medicine Clinic in Georgia. He specializes in sports medicine
and arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder, as well as
trauma, joint replacement, and general orthopaedic procedures.
Dr. Sutton serves as head team physician for the University of
North Carolina at Wilmington, where he is an adjunct professor
in the Department of Health and Physical Education. He has also
served as Director of Sports Medicine for the NCAA Women's Golf
Championship, Women's Davis Cup Tennis Championship and the
Wilmington Hammerhead Professional Soccer Team. He is clinical
professor of surgery for University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill School of Medicine.
Dr. Sutton is a member of the esteemed Arthroscopy
Association of North America, the American College of Sports
Medicine, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine
and numerous other medical societies. He is board certified in
orthopaedic surgery and a fellow of the American Academy of

S. O’Malley, MD
Dr O'Malley has practiced orthopaedic surgery since 1993 and joined
Wilmington Orthopaedic Group in 1999. He graduated from Dartmouth College
(Phi Beta Kappa) and received his medical degree from Upstate Medical School
in Syracuse, NY. Dr. O’Malley completed his Orthopaedic residency from State
University of New York at Stony Brook, NY and a Sports Medicine fellowship
at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia. During his fellowship, Dr. O’Malley
worked with the Philadelphia Eagles professional football team, the
Philadelphia Flyers professional hockey team and the Virginia Slims Tennis
Tournament. In Wilmington, Dr. O’Malley has worked as team physician for the
Seattle Mariners AA baseball team (Port City Roosters), the Sharks
collegiate baseball team, the Carolina Stars football team, Topsail High
School and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
Dr. O’Malley’s clinical interests include sports medicine, arthroscopy, and
joint replacement surgery. He resides in Wilmington with his wife and four

Albert
W. Marr, MD
Dr. Marr joined Wilmington Orthopaedic Group in 1999. He graduated from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received his medical degree
from Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. Dr. Marr
completed a five year Orthopaedic Residency at the Wake Forest University
Baptist Medical Center and a one-year fellowship in Foot and Ankle and
Sports Medicine at the Foundation for Orthopaedic, Athletic & Reconstructive
Research in Houston, TX.
Dr. Albert Marr and Dr. Mark Foster are the only fellowship trained foot &
ankle specialists in the Wilmington area. Dr. Marr is interested in all foot
and ankle pathology including bunions, lesser toe deformities, heel pain and
complex foot and ankle reconstruction. Additional interests include sports
injuries of the lower extremities. Dr. Marr serves as the team physician for

Richard
S. Moore, Jr., MD
Dr. Moore joined Wilmington Orthopaedic Group in 2000. He earned his
undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill and completed his orthopaedic residency at the Hospital of the
University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Moore is fellowship trained in Hand, Upper Extremity and Microvascular
surgery. He completed his fellowship at Duke University Medical Center,
where he subsequently practiced as an assistant professor from 1997 to 2000.
While at Duke, he was a member of the replantation and microsurgical
reconstructive team and director of the orthopaedic trauma service. In
addition to his fellowship training, Dr. Moore completed an AO Traveling
preceptorship in Pelvic and Acetabular Trauma in Los Angeles. Dr. Moore
received his Certificate of Added Qualifications in Surgery of the Hand in
December 2002.
Dr. Moore resides in Wilmington with his wife and three children.

Jack W. Bowling, Jr., MD
After graduating Summa Cum Laude from North Carolina State University, Dr.
Bowling attended medical school at Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake
Forest University. He completed a five-year residency program in Orthopaedic
Surgery at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. In addition, Dr.
Bowling completed a one year Joint Replacement Fellowship in Chicago,
Illinois under the instruction of Dr. Wayne G. Paprosky, a leader in
arthroplasty.
Dr. Bowling joined Wilmington Orthopaedic Group in 2001. He practices
general orthopaedics with a special interest in hip and knee arthroplasty,
including those requiring complex reconstruction. Dr. Bowling has trained
extensively in the minimally invasive total hip replacement (MIS-THR)
procedure and is one of the only orthopaedists in southeastern North
Carolina to perform this surgery. Considered an expert in MIS-THR, Dr.
Bowling routinely travels across the country to teach the procedure to other
orthopaedists.
Dr. Bowling’s additional interests include sports medicine, arthroscopy, and
trauma. Dr. Bowling is married and has two young children.

Scott Q. Hannum, MD
Dr. Hannum joined Wilmington Orthopaedic Group in 2007. He is a
graduate of Ohio State University, completed medical school in
Toledo, Ohio, and completed his orthopaedic residency in Akron,
Ohio. He completed a joint replacement fellowship from Shands
Hospital at the University of Florida.
Dr. Hannum has spent the last seven years in Washington, NC, in
private practice. He is certified by the American Board of
Orthopaedic Surgeons and currently specializes in primary and
revision joint replacement including minimally-invasive hip and knee
procedures.
Dr. Hannum has worked extensively as a consultant with many
different orthopaedic companies and has helped design instruments
and implants for surgery. He is married with four children.

Patrick T. Boylan, MD
Dr. Boylan joined Wilmington Orthopaedic Group in 2007. Dr. Boylan
graduated from Northwestern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.
He completed his Internal Medicine internship and his Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at the Ohio State University
Medical Center and is fellowship-trained in Interventional Spine and
Musculoskeletal Medicine. Dr. Boylan is Board certified in Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation, as well as Electrodiagnostic Medicine (EMG).
He resides in Wilmington with his wife and two children.

S. Austin Yeargan, MD
Dr. Yeargan joined Wilmington Orthopaedic Group in 2007 as the first
physician in our Southport office. Dr. Yeargan graduated from East Carolina
School of Medicine and performed his Orthopaedic Surgery Fellowship training
at the University of Hawaii Queens Medical Center. He completed his Sports
Medicine Fellowship at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado. Dr.
Yeargan specializes in sports medicine, knee and shoulder surgery and
minimally invasive adult reconstruction. Dr. Yeargan lives in Wilmington
with his wife and three children.

FOUNDING PHYSICIANS:
James D. Hundley, MD 
Dr. Hundley received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed his Orthopaedic
Surgery Residency program there as well. He is certified by the American Board
of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is a member of numerous medical organizations
including the American Orthopaedic Association, the American Academy of
Orthopaedic Surgeons, the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association and the New
Hanover-Pender Medical Society. Dr. Hundley was the team physician for the
University of North Carolina at Wilmington for 22 years and remains a member of
the Adjunct Faculty. Dr. Hundley has been regularly listed in the “Best Doctors
in America: Southeast Region” by Best Doctors, Inc. from 1996 to 2004.
An active member of the Wilmington community, Dr. Hundley has been chairman of
the New Hanover Advisory Library Board, president of the Wilmington Rotary Club,
president of Cape Fear Academy Board of Directors, chief of staff of the New
Hanover Regional Medical Center and president of the University of North
Carolina Medical Alumni Association. He is currently treasurer of the Board of
Directors of the Wilmington area Committee of 100 (W.I.D., Inc).
Dr. Hundley’s practice includes general orthopaedic surgery with extensive
experience and special interest in joint replacement, sports medicine, and upper
extremity. Dr. Hundley is married and has three children and four grandchildren.
Charles
L. Nance, MD
Dr. Nance received his medical degree from Duke University. He served a rotating internship at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA and spent two years on active duty in the United States Army as a medical officer. His general surgery and orthopaedic residencies were completed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Nance is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has served on the Academy's Board of Councilors. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. He is a past president of the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Nance retired from Wilmington Orthopaedic Group in 2001.
Thomas Craven Jr. MD
Dr. Craven, the son of a physician, was born and raised in Huntersville, NC. He graduated from Oak Ridge Military Academy and Davidson University. He served as a US Army infantry line officer during the Korean Conflict where he was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor. He graduated from the UNC School of Medicine in 1958 and then completed his internship at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and his residency in orthopaedic surgery at UNC Hospitals. He was certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and was a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association, the Nathan A. Womack Surgical Society, the New Hanover-Pender Medical Society, the North Carolina Medical Society, and the American Medical Association.
An Eagle Scout as a youth, he continued to serve his community through activity in his church and as team physician for Hoggard High School for over twenty years. He practiced with the Wilmington Orthopaedic Group from 1963 until he retired as president in 1993.
Along with his interests in his family, including his several grandchildren, he enjoys kayaking and running. Subsequent to his retirement he has served as a physician volunteer on Indian reservations in western USA and has acquired competence in a variety of other areas including electrical engineering.
Bruce
H Dorman MD
Dr. Dorman was born in Plainfield, NJ on July 24, 1924. He attended
Duke University for Medical School in 1948. He served an internship
at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. He attended orthopaedic
residency at Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. He also served
in the US Navy.
He practiced briefly in Plainfield, NJ. and moved to Wilmington, NC in 1955. He was the founding physician of Wilmington Orthopaedic Group. Initially had an office at Oleander Court apartments. He then moved to Red Cross Street. He built an office at 315 North 17th Street in 1963. The Group moved from that office to its present location in 1980.
Dr. Dorman was director of the Rotary Crippled Children's Clinic for many years. He served as consultant to the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. He was the second Chief of Staff at the then New Hanover Memorial Hospital. He was recognized by the Governor's award as the physician of the year for vocational rehabilitation. He was Secretary-Treasurer of the NC Orthopaedic Association. He practiced in the Wilmington Orthopaedic Group until his untimely death in 1991.
Dr. Dorman was an expert sailor and skier. He also was a talented pianist. He is survived by two children. Hugh, who is a professor of anesthesiology at the Medical University of SC and Narda, who is a cardiovascular nurse anesthetist at Duke University Medical Center.
PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS:
H. Deak Walden, O.P.A.-C.
Deak Walden is a veteran of the US Navy, where he served as a Hospital Corpsman. With thirty years experience, he is the senior Physician Assistant at the Wilmington Orthopaedic Group where he has utilized his special skills at designing and developing a functional metacarpal brace that is used by health-care providers nationwide.
Mr. Walden joined Wilmington Orthopaedic Group in 1973. He is an Honors graduate of the Hospital Corpsman School, and became certified as an Orthopaedic Physician’s Assistant in 1979. Mr. Walden is an active member of the American Society of Orthopaedic Physician Assistants, and served as Parliamentarian for two terms and President from 1995-1997. He is currently serving as Pariamentarian for the National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Physician’s Assistants. Mr. Walden has special interests in joint replacement and trauma. He is married and has two sons and a daugher.
Daniel A. Culbreth, P.A.-C.
A native of Smithfield, NC, Mr. Culbreth graduated from North Carolina State University in 1985 with a degree in Zoology. He completed the Physician Assistant program at Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in 1994 and joined Wilmington Orthopaedic Group the same year. He is a member of several orthopaedic and physician assistant related organizations. He is board certified by the NCCPA and a fellow of the American Association of Physician Assistants. He is a member of the sports medicine staff at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and team practitioner for UNCW Soccer. He has a special interest in sports medicine and minimally invasive joint replacement. Mr. Culbreth is married with two children.
Craig C. Johnson, P.A.-C.
Mr. Johnson joined Wilmington Orthopaedic Group in August 1996. Originally from Oakdale, NY, he has a degree in Health and Sports Science from Wake Forest University. He continued his studies at Wake Forest, completing the Physician Assistant Program at the University’s Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He is board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and a fellow of the American Association of Physician Assistants. He is a member of the sports medicine staff at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and belongs to several medical societies. Johnson resides in Wilmington with his wife and

Amelia Lamb, P.A.-C.
Ms. Lamb joined Wilmington Orthopaedic Group in December 1999. Originally from Ingold, NC, she received a degree from Wake Forest University in Health and Sports Science with a minor in Biology. She completed the Physician Assistant Program in 1990 at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest. Prior to joining Wilmington Orthopaedic Group, Ms.
Lamb worked in Orthopaedic Surgery at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center with a special focus on sports medicine and total joint replacements. She is board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and a fellow of the American Association of Physician Assistants. Ms. Lamb is a member of the sports medicine staff at Cape Fear Community College and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Jolly ,
P.A.-C.
Mr. Jolly joined Wilmington Orthopaedic Group in December 2004. Originally from
Anchorage, Alaska, Mr. Jolly obtained a degree in Sports Injuries Management
from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. While at UNLV, he played on the rugby
team, and credits his interest in sports medicine to his love of the game. He
completed the Physician Assistant Program at the Wake Forest University School
of Medicine in 2002. Prior to joining Wilmington Orthopaedic Group, Mr. Jolly
worked for an orthopaedic specialty group in Winston-Salem for two years. Mr.
Jolly specializes in sports medicine and back injuries. He is board certified
by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and
a fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.
Ryan Murphy, P.A.-C.
Mr. Murphy joined Wilmington Orthopaedic Group in 2006. He graduated from
the Wake Forest School of Medicine Physician Assistant program in 2002. Mr.
Murphy spent two years in Vail, Colorado training in Orthopaedic Trauma and
Sports Medicine.
Betsy Parker, P.A.-C., ATC
Ms. Parker joined Wilmington Orthopaedic Group in 2007. She graduated from
South University Physician Assistant Program in Savannah, Georgia. She is also a
Certified Athletic Trainer specializing in sports medicine.
